Suolaiset vohvelit – Salty Waffles

To start of 2022’s Waffle Wednesdays, here is a Finnish variation of waffles – Suolaiset vohvelit or Salty Waffles. These work great as a breakfast waffle or a snack. Great savory waffles that get their flavor from the cheese! 

As I have mentioned in previous waffle entries, please keep in mind that for Finnish waffles, or Scandinavian waffles in general, you will need a heart waffle maker. The biggest difference here isn’t that they’re heart shaped, but they are also a lot thinner than the usual American/Belgian waffles. A waffle maker like this would be perfect, and let’s you cook two at the time!

Suolaiset vohvelit - Salty Waffles

Delicious savory waffles, great for waffles or a snack

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Additional Time 10 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 dl / 10 oz all purpose flour.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder.
  • 2 eggs.
  • 2 dl / 7 oz cheddar cheese.
  • 4 dl / 13.5 oz cream.

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour and powder together.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, mix to a smooth batter and let swell for 10 minutes.
  3. Bake waffles until golden on a waffle iron.


Serve these savory waffles with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for example.
