Karjalanpaisti - Karelian stew

Karjalanpaisti - Karelian stew

A easy and delicious Finnish meat stew that has just a few simple ingredients to make!

Ingredients

  • 500 grams / 1 pound of meat, half beef and half pork.
  • 1-1½ tsp salt
  • A few whole white peppers
  • A few whole allspice
  • 2 onions
  • 1-2 carrots
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Water

Instructions

    1. Cut the meat into bite sized pieces. Ready-cut Karelian roast meats are often quite small cubes.
    2. Put all the ingredients in the pot and add enough water to cover 1/3-2/3 of the meat pieces.
    3. Put the pot in the oven. The temperature should initially be 225°C/440°F so that the uppermost pieces of meat brown a little.
    4. Then reduce the oven heat to 100-150°C/200-300°F and let the food simmer until cooked.

    Serve with mashed potatoes.
